Introduction
Minelab presented the GPZ 8000 in February 2026, the new flagship of its GPZ series – with the ambition of enabling the deepest gold detecting to date in difficult ground conditions. The GPZ 8000 builds on the proven ZVT platform of the GPZ 7000, but goes a significant step further technically in almost every area: new GeoZVT™ signal processing, three specially developed concentric toroidal coils (Z-Set), Echo Sonic Pro™ stereo audio and an improved harness system for comfortable working even on long outings. This review objectively summarises all available information and helps you assess whether the GPZ 8000 is the right detector for your requirements.
Note on availability: In spring 2026, the GPZ 8000 was initially supplied with the single coil pack (Z18). The three coil pack with all three coils (Z13, Z17, Z18) followed shortly afterwards.
Core technologies in detail
GeoZVT™ technology
The proven ZVT depth performance is complemented by extended signal control. The system automatically analyses and adapts to changing ground conditions – the detector remains stable even with heavy mineralisation, conductive ground and electromagnetic interference (EMI).
Ground optimisation · EMI control
Echo Sonic Pro™ audio
Multi-stage audio system with genuine stereo separation: different signal components are transmitted separately to each ear. This allows a fine distinction between targets and ground noise that would not be recognisable in the conventional way.
Exclusive to the GPZ 8000
WM 14 wireless audio
Low-latency wireless via the WM 14 module: no cable, no delay, full freedom of movement. The module is included and provides stable audio over the entire search area. Also compatible with wired 3.5 mm headphones.
WM 14 included
Colour LCD display
Full-colour LCD with a clear, modern menu system – easy to read even in direct sunlight. Adjustable backlight (level 1–3) and integrated flashlight (also level 1–3) for night and dusk use directly in the detector.
Integrated flashlight
PRO-SWING 125 harness
The new harness system transfers the weight of the detector to the hips, considerably reducing the strain on shoulders and arms. The GA10 guide arm improves swing control and noticeably reduces fatigue during long searches.
Included
Hybrid shaft system
Combination of carbon and fibreglass: light and stable, with reduced vibration from knocks. The teardrop profile prevents unwanted rotation of the coil. The fibreglass lower shaft minimises detection noise for clearer weak signals.
Carbon + fibreglass
All-day battery (2×)
Two interchangeable 7.2 V / 46 Wh lithium-ion batteries ensure all-day searching without interruption. The battery can be changed in the field, so that no search has to end early due to lack of power.
7.2 V · 46 Wh · 2× battery
Integrated flashlight
A flashlight integrated directly into the control unit allows searching at dusk and after dark. Three brightness levels, no additional equipment – ideal for early morning or evening outings in remote areas.

Light swing weight
At just 2.78 kg (6.1 lbs) including the 18" coil, the GPZ 8000 is surprisingly manageable for a flagship PI detector. In combination with the PRO-SWING 125 harness, the result is a balanced system that remains controllable even during searches lasting several hours.

Z-Set concentric toroidal coils
At the heart of the GPZ 8000 is the new Z-Set Concentric Toroidal Coil System. The three coils share the same ZVT platform but differ in geometry and winding – and therefore in the balance between depth, sensitivity, EMI behaviour and handling. What makes them special: on the ZVT platform, the concentric design behaves differently from classic PI concentric coils and often runs more quietly than the coil size would suggest.
Z18
45.7 cm · 18"
Maximum depth
Optimised for maximum depth performance and stability in heavily mineralised ground. Ideal for open terrain and medium to large gold. The large footprint smooths ground noise in hot ground – resulting in stable threshold behaviour even at high sensitivity.
Included in the basic package
Z17
43.2 cm · 17"
EMI & conductive ground
Developed for areas with high EMI and conductive ground. Stable operation with strong target response on small to medium gold – particularly suitable for old mining areas with mixed ground conditions and strong radio signals nearby.
Optional / three coil pack
Z13
33 cm · 13"
Vegetation & handling
Designed for densely vegetated terrain and areas that are difficult to access. Precise detection of small to medium gold, balanced handling and less fatigue over long outings. Particularly suitable for narrow gullies, wooded goldfields and detailed technical work.
Optional / three coil pack

Purchase recommendation: who is the GPZ 8000 suitable for?
Ideally suited
GPZ 8000 recommended
Professional gold prospectors with experience of difficult ground
Use in heavily mineralised areas (Australia, Africa, South America)
Searching for medium-sized to large gold at greater depths
Areas with high EMI or conductive ground
Anyone who wants to combine maximum depth and precision in one detector

Searching in shallow, unproblematic ground without mineralisation
Anyone looking for a light everyday detector for occasional outings
Budget-conscious beginners – the GPX 6000, for example, is recommended here
Conclusion & rating
The GPZ 8000 is not an update – it is a fresh start for the GPZ platform.
With the GPZ 8000, Minelab has not simply upgraded the GPZ 7000 but developed a new generation: a new coil geometry (concentric toroidal), fundamentally revised audio (Echo Sonic Pro™), extended ground management (GeoZVT™) and a harness system that takes wearing comfort to a new level. The result is a detector that offers more depth, more signal clarity and more flexibility than its predecessor in demanding gold prospecting scenarios.
For experienced gold prospectors searching mineralised areas for depths that other detectors cannot reach, the GPZ 8000 is currently the most powerful commercially available detector on the market. Anyone who has the necessary budget and experience gets a professional tool that justifies its price.
