Metal detectors for beginners

Getting started in metal detecting

Metal detectors for beginners – getting started the right way

A good metal detector for beginners does not have to be complicated. What matters is easy operation, reliable signals and a detector that suits the places where you want to search. Here we show you what really counts when you start out and which models we recommend from our own experience.

Which metal detector is suitable for beginners?

For most beginners, a metal detector at around 250 to 500 euros is a sensible choice. In this class you already get decent target discrimination, good depth and controls that let you get started without a long learning curve.

If you mainly search ploughed fields and meadows, an uncomplicated VLF detector is often quite sufficient. For the beach, salt water or changing ground conditions we would rather recommend a modern multi-frequency detector.

Our selection

Three metal detectors we recommend to beginners

Instead of suggesting twenty detectors at once, we deliberately limit ourselves to three different options here. Which model suits you best depends above all on where you want to search.

Multi-frequency tip

Nokta Score

For beginners who want to start straight away with modern multi-frequency technology.

  • Simultaneous multi-frequency
  • Very simple menu navigation
  • Waterproof to 5 metres
  • Also suitable for the beach and salt water
More in reserve

Minelab X-Terra Elite

For ambitious beginners who do not want to replace their detector again after a short time.

  • Minelab Multi-IQ Multifrequenz
  • Park, field and beach programs
  • Fully waterproof to 5 metres
  • Plenty in reserve for later

Which metal detector suits you?

Where you search matters more than the longest possible list of features. These four questions help you choose.

Budget up to about €350

Simple operation and solid performance matter more than as many settings as possible.

Fields & meadows

Both good single-frequency detectors and multi-frequency detectors work very well here.

Beach & salt water

For wet salt-water sand, a true multi-frequency detector is usually the better choice.

Starting for the long term

If you want to take up the hobby seriously, plan for some reserve in technology and settings.

From our experience

The most expensive detector is not automatically the best for beginners

After more than 30 years of our own experience with metal detectors, we know: a beginner usually benefits more from a clear, simple detector whose signals are quickly understood than from a high-end detector with countless settings.

If you start by searching fields and meadows, a good all-round detector can keep you happy for years. If, on the other hand, you want to search regularly on the beach or on difficult ground right from the start, investing in multi-frequency technology is worthwhile.

What matters

What beginners should look for in a metal detector

1. Simple operation

Good beginner detectors can be switched on and used sensibly right away with a suitable search program. You can get to know the finer settings later.

2. Weight and ergonomics

A metal detector is swung for hours. Low weight and a well-balanced shaft are therefore more important than they may seem on paper.

3. Waterproofing

If you want to search streams, lakes or beaches, a fully waterproof detector is much more practical. Check whether only the coil or the complete detector is waterproof.

4. Target discrimination

The target ID display and audio tones help you roughly identify iron, aluminium, coins and other metals. However, no detector discriminates perfectly.

5. Single frequency or multi-frequency?

Single-frequency detectors are proven and quite sufficient for many normal search areas. Multi-frequency offers advantages on changing, mineralised ground and especially on salt-water beaches.

6. Spare parts and service

Search coils, coil covers, batteries and other accessories should also be available for a metal detector later on. Supply is usually much better with established manufacturers.

Important: Depth figures are always only guide values. The size, shape and position of the target as well as soil type, moisture, mineralisation and the search coil have a considerable influence on the depth that can actually be reached.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from metal detecting beginners

How much does a good metal detector for beginners cost?

For a sensible start we usually recommend about 250 to 500 euros. In this range you already get good brand-name detectors with reliable target discrimination, decent performance and beginner-friendly operation.

How deep can a metal detector find targets?

Under good conditions, coin-sized objects can often be detected at around 20 to 30 centimetres. Larger metal objects are located much deeper. There is no fixed depth value, as the ground, object size, position, coil and settings all have a major influence.

Is multi-frequency worthwhile for beginners?

Yes, especially if you want to search in different places or on salt-water beaches. Modern multi-frequency detectors can use several frequency ranges at the same time and therefore often run more stably on difficult ground. For searching fields and meadows only, however, multi-frequency is not a must.

Which metal detector is particularly easy to use?

The Nokta Simplex Ultra is one of the uncomplicated entry-level all-rounders. If you want to start right away with simultaneous multi-frequency, the Nokta Score, for example, is an alternative that is just as easy to use.

Can I search on the beach as a beginner?

Yes. Dry sand is no problem for many detectors. Wet salt-water sand, however, can interfere more with single-frequency detectors. For regular searching by the sea we therefore recommend a suitable multi-frequency detector.

Do I need a permit for metal detecting?

Which permits are required depends on the country or region, the land and the type of search. In Germany this is regulated by each federal state. The landowner's permission is always required, and heritage protection laws may also apply. Please check the rules that apply where you want to search before you go out.

Personal advice

Still unsure which detector suits you?

You do not have to work your way through technical data sheets. Simply tell us where you mainly want to search, how much experience you already have and what budget you have in mind. We will be happy to help you choose.
