Protection against ticks in forests and meadows - how to stay safe.

Introduction: Why tick protection is so important.

Ticks are more than just annoying bloodsuckers. They can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease and TBE (tick-borne encephalitis). From spring to fall, the risk of encountering ticks while walking in nature increases. Good tick protection is important for nature lovers. Hikers, joggers, dog owners and families with children should also pay attention.

Ticks just bite hard!

Dangers from ticks: diseases and risk areas

Ticks are active almost everywhere in Germany. The risk is particularly high in TBE risk areas. These areas are published by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) every year. The two main diseases transmitted by ticks are:

Lyme disease (Lyme borreliosis): A bacterial infection that can attack joints, nerves and organs.
TBE: A viral inflammation of the brain or meninges. There is no specific treatment, only a preventive vaccination.

How to effectively protect yourself from tick bites.

  • Wear the right clothes.
  • Wear long-sleeved tops and long pants.
  • Tuck your trouser legs into your socks
  • Light-colored clothing helps to detect ticks early.
  • Use tick repellent.
  • Use repellent sprays or tick repellents with ingredients such as Icaridin or DEET.
  • Apply the repellent to large areas of the legs, arms, neck and shoes.
  • Check your body regularly.
  • After spending time outdoors, you should check yourself and your companions thoroughly for ticks – especially:
  • Back of the knees
  • Groin area
  • Armpits
  • Hairline
  • Neck area
  • Ticks often take hours to bite. Early removal significantly reduces the risk of infection.
  • Pro TIP!: Take a shower immediately after searching!

1. Remove the tick correctly

Use tick tweezers, tick card or tweezers.
Hold the tick close to the skin. Pull it out slowly and straight. Do not twist or squeeze it!

2. Disinfect the skin area

After removal, the bite site should be disinfected and observed.

3. Observe symptoms

Watch out for redness (erythema migrans), fever, headache or flu-like symptoms.
See a doctor immediately if you have symptoms. Early treatment prevents serious complications.
Tick protection for children and pets
Use child-friendly tick repellents.
Pay particular attention to possible ticks during play breaks in the grass.
For dogs and cats: check regularly and, if necessary, use veterinarian-recommended spot-on products or tick collars.
Additional protection: the TBE vaccination
TBE vaccination is strongly recommended in risk areas.
The vaccination is well tolerated and many health insurance companies cover the costs.
Conclusion: Stay safe in the great outdoors with simple behavior
With good preparation and simple steps, you can reduce the risk of a tick bite. Tick protection does not mean giving up nature experiences. It means enjoying them healthily and consciously.
