What matters in relic hunting

Military relics often lie deep, are frequently made of iron and sit in mineralised or junk-littered ground. These four points decide your success.

  • Depth & coil size

Military relics often lie deeper than coins. A larger coil gives more depth on larger objects – for very deep large objects there are two-box detectors.

    • XTREM Hunter to 5 m
    • CTX 3030 17″ coil
    • DEUS II 34 28 × 34 cm
  • Clean iron separation

Former positions and fields are full of iron junk. A good target display saves unnecessary holes.

    • Manticore 2D Target Trace
    • CTX 3030 FeCo display
    • Equinox 900 119 categories
  • Multi-frequency for difficult ground

Mineralised ground interferes with single-frequency detectors. Multi-frequency runs more quietly and identifies targets more accurately.

    • CTX 3030 1.5–100 kHz
    • DEUS II 49 single frequencies
    • All six Multi-frequency
  • Law & safety

Clarify permits and permission before every search – and with ammunition: never touch it.

    • Permit usually needed
    • Historical finds must be reported
    • Ammunition found call the police

Frequently asked questions about relic hunting

Which metal detector is best for military relic hunting?

For most detectorists, a light multi-frequency detector with a large coil is the best choice, such as the XP DEUS II 34 with its 28 × 34 cm coil. If you want to locate large objects several metres deep, you need a two-box detector such as the XP XTREM Hunter XTR-115. On ground littered with iron junk, the 2D target display of the Minelab Manticore helps to separate iron from good finds.

How deep does a metal detector find military relics?

Depth depends mainly on the size of the object and the coil. Single-handed detectors usually find small items such as buttons or badges in the top few tens of centimetres, larger objects much deeper – and a larger coil adds extra depth. According to the manufacturer, the two-box XP XTREM Hunter XTR-115 locates large objects down to 5 m and deliberately ignores small items.

Why is multi-frequency important for relic hunting?

Fields, woods and former battlefields are often mineralised and contaminated with iron junk. Multi-frequency detectors evaluate several frequencies at once and run more quietly and accurately on such ground than single-frequency detectors. All six detectors in this comparison use multi-frequency.

Is it allowed to search for military relics in Germany?

In most German federal states, metal detecting requires a search permit from the responsible heritage authority, and always the landowner's permission as well. Finds of historical significance must be reported. Items bearing symbols of unconstitutional organisations must not be displayed or distributed publicly, not even as a photo on the internet (Section 86a of the German Criminal Code). Other countries have their own rules.

What should you do if you find ammunition?

Never touch, move or dig up ammunition or explosive devices – even if they look rusty and harmless. Mark the spot, keep your distance and call the police immediately (110 in Germany, 112 across the EU), who will bring in the bomb disposal service.
