The right panning technique makes it !

A typical beginner's mistake when probing is the so-called "smiley swing". This fundamental error in the search technique is very common, especially among beginners. To be fair, however, it must also be said that we have also observed this serious technical error in long-time explorers. Many years ago, I myself met a sonde hunter on the beach who practised this very mistake to such an extreme that, according to him, he rarely found anything valuable - that's how it can go. I couldn't even imagine what great finds the explorer had "walked over" over the years.

We can actually see quite clearly what is often done wrong on our graphic ...

To ensure that no signals or finds are lost, it is very important that the searchcoil is always guided as close as possible to the ground so that the Metalldetektoren can always search the maximum possible depth. And now the most important thing: the search coil must always be guided horizontally to the ground with every swivelling movement, otherwise you run the risk of "missing" signals that you would have located with the correct swivelling technique.

Why do you lose finds when you swing a "smiley"?

The search coil of the Metalldetektoren builds up a stable magnetic field, especially under the coil (see diagram). If you swing a smiley, the magnetic field is partially pulled out of the ground at the end of each swing. It is understandable that a certain area of the floor is not scanned with each swing and that, over time, one or two objects are simply overlooked or missed.

Conclusion:

Always guide the search coil as close to the ground as possible and do not remove the search coil from the ground at the end of each swivelling movement. The right panning technique brings the good finds ;)
