ICON or ICON X – what is the difference?

Both detectors share the same basic platform: FMF multi-frequency technology, a fully wireless concept, the same 28 cm search coil with IP68 protection and the identical shaft. Many settings are identical too – 25 sensitivity levels, 11 iron volume levels, multi-notch with 28 segments, ground balance (Grab, Tracking, Standard, Pro) and the tone options Pitch, 2/3/5 Tones and Full Tones. The difference lies in the depth of settings – and therefore in the target group.

The ICON is aimed at everyone who wants to go detecting quickly and easily: 3 factory programs (Field, Park, Beach & Surf), 3 custom memory slots, 5 reactivity levels (1–5), 1-point discrimination resolution and 3 audio type settings with the standard audio curve – enough for fields, meadows, parks and beaches. The ICON X goes one step further: 6 factory programs (additionally Trashy Field, Forest, Wet Beach) plus 6 custom memory slots, an additional 28 kHz single frequency for small finds and mineralised ground, 7 reactivity levels (0–6), 0.5-point resolution in the iron range and 6 audio type settings with the additional Enhanced audio curve.

In short: the ICON is the more convincing entry-level detector. The ICON X is the more convincing all-rounder. The price difference between equally equipped packages is €100 in each case.

What's behind it? The core technologies

With the ICON series, XP has transferred proven DEUS II technologies into a more accessible housing.

FMF® simultaneous multi-frequency

Several frequencies up to 40 kHz active at the same time – not alternately. Compared with single-frequency detectors, this considerably improves ground stability and target accuracy on changing ground.

Fully wireless system

Coil, control unit and headphones communicate via XP's proprietary radio protocol with approx. 4 ms latency on 36 automatically selected channels. No cable to get tangled – no noise on the line.

Sunlight-readable LCD

The LCD with adjustable backlight remains easy to read even in direct sunlight. VDI scale -6 to 99: iron range and non-ferrous metals at a glance.

Precise ground balance

Four modes are available: Grab (manual), Tracking (automatic), Standard and Pro – for heavily mineralised or wet ground. Maximum depth even on difficult terrain.

Multi-notch with 28 segments

In addition to discrimination, specific conductivity windows can be masked out. Practical example: iron bottle caps produce two signals (at approx. 10 and 60–70) and can be filtered precisely.

XP GO Terrain app

Document finds, record GPS routes and map search areas – directly via the free smartphone app. Finds can be transferred automatically or manually. All four models are compatible.

Who is the ICON series suitable for?

From the very first search to the experienced field professional – the ICON line covers a wide range.

Beginners & returners

Anyone who wants to go detecting for the first time or after a break will find the ICON an uncomplicated way in, with genuine XP technology. Switch on and start detecting – without weeks of familiarisation.

Advanced detectorists

With 6 memory slots, 7 reactivity levels and the fine 28 kHz single frequency, the ICON X offers enough scope to set up different search areas optimally and to switch quickly between fields, woodland and beach.

DEUS II users (second detector)

As both models support DEUS II FMF coils (D22FMF, D28FMF, DELLFMFHP, D3428FMF), existing accessories can still be used. An economical addition as a light second detector or a loan detector for your search group.

Beach & mudflat detectorists

The IP68-certified search coil is submersible to 5 metres. With the optional BH-02 bone conduction headphones and the Waveguide, you can also search underwater. FMF technology delivers stable signals despite salty, wet sand.

Compatibility & accessory ecosystem

The ICON series is integrated into the proven XP ecosystem – existing accessories can still be used.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, all four models are available. You can see the current stock level directly on the respective product page. If you have any questions about delivery times, just give us a call.
The ICON X offers several enhancements over the ICON: an additional 28 kHz single frequency (useful for small finds and mineralised ground), twice as many programs and program memories (6 factory + 6 custom instead of 3 + 3), 7 instead of 5 reactivity levels, finer discrimination resolution of 0.5 point instead of 1 point in the iron range, and 6 instead of 3 audio type settings with the additional Enhanced audio curve. Search coil, shaft, core technology, 25 sensitivity levels, 11 iron volume levels, multi-notch with 28 segments, tone options (Pitch, 2/3/5 Tones, Full Tones) and ground balance (Grab, Tracking, Standard, Pro) are identical.
The multi-notch function complements classic discrimination. While discrimination masks all conductivities below a threshold, the notch function allows you to mute individual conductivity windows – while values above and below them are still reported. A practical example from the official manual: iron bottle caps produce two signals on the conductivity bar (around 10 and 60–70). With the notch function, exactly these segments can be masked out, while genuine good finds with values in between remain audible. The resolution is 28 segments in the iron and transition range.
Yes. All DEUS II FMF search coils are compatible with the ICON and ICON X – specifically the D22FMF (22.5 cm), D28FMF (28 cm), DELLFMFHP (24 × 13 cm HF2) and D3428FMF (34 × 28 cm). This means that anyone who already owns a DEUS II can continue to use their coils. The XP MI-6 and MI-4 pinpointers and the WSA ST and WSA XL ST wireless headphones are also compatible.
The supplied 28 cm search coil is IP68-certified and suitable for water depths of up to 5 metres. With the standard cover, the control unit (remote) is only waterproof to 1.5 m for a maximum of 30 minutes – sufficient for mudflat and beach detecting. The WSA ST headphones are not waterproof. For genuine underwater searching down to 5 m, you need the BH-02 bone conduction headphones with their waterproof connector and the Waveguide for a stable radio link between coil and remote under water.
FMF stands for Fast Multi Frequency. Unlike classic single-frequency detectors, which only work on one fixed frequency, the detector transmits several frequencies up to 40 kHz simultaneously. This improves target identification in changing ground conditions, increases the accuracy of the VDI display and makes the detector more versatile – from loose sandy soil to heavily mineralised clay soils or wet beaches. In the event of strong electromagnetic interference, you can also switch to single-frequency mode.
The ICON was explicitly designed to be ready for use straight away without lengthy familiarisation. The pre-installed factory programs (Field, Park, Beach & Surf) cover typical search situations. Anyone without previous knowledge simply chooses a suitable program and starts. The ICON X is also suitable for beginners and additionally offers the Trashy Field, Forest and Wet Beach programs, as well as the option of delving deeper into the settings as your experience grows.
The packages with WSA ST wireless headphones are recommended for anyone who does not own compatible XP wireless headphones. The detector's built-in speaker is only of limited use in the field – wind noise and ambient noise impair signal perception. The WSA ST transmits via XP's radio protocol with approx. 4 ms latency, i.e. without cables and without noticeable delay, and noticeably improves your hit rate. Anyone who already owns WSA ST, WSA XL ST or WS6 ST headphones can opt for the cheaper package.
Battery life is around 11 hours for coil and remote in multi-frequency mode (or 10–18 h in single-frequency mode); the WSA ST wireless headphones last approx. 15 hours. Charging is via USB-C with a certified 5 V/1 A power supply – charging takes around 3 hours. Coil, remote and headphones are charged simultaneously using the supplied 3-way cable. With proper storage (between 40% and 80% charge), the built-in lithium polymer batteries have a service life of around 10 years.
XP gives a 5-year warranty on parts and labour (registration required via updater.xpmetaldetectors.com after purchase). An optional warranty extension to 10 years is available for the main components (remote, search coil, wireless headphones). Batteries and connectors have a 2-year warranty; wearing parts such as coil covers or headphone pads are excluded.
