How to bring the remote of your XP ICON or ICON X and the WSA ST wireless headphones up to the latest firmware in just a few minutes. The procedure is identical for both detectors.
XP supports its detectors with free software updates throughout their entire service life – a clear advantage of the XP ecosystem, in which the ICON and ICON X are related to the DEUS II. Each update fixes minor bugs, improves performance and sometimes unlocks new functions. We recommend checking briefly after every XP announcement whether a new version is available.
Important before you start: The update can only be carried out via a computer (PC, Mac or laptop). It is not possible via smartphone or tablet. If possible, use Google Chrome – Microsoft Edge and Firefox also work, but Internet Explorer does not.
Have everything ready, then the update will run through without interruption.
PC, Mac or laptop with internet access. No smartphone/tablet.
Google Chrome recommended (alternatively Edge/Firefox).
The USB-C data lead of your supplied 3-way charging cable.
Create it once free of charge and confirm it by email.
Remote and headphones should have sufficient battery charge.
Do not touch the cable or device during the transfer.
Only needed once – after that you simply log in.
On your computer, go to the official XP Updater page: updater.xpmetaldetectors.com
The first time, scroll right to the bottom and click on “Create account”. Enter your email address and password very carefully – the confirmation will be sent to this address.
Open the confirmation email from XP and click on “Validate your account”.
Back on the login page, log in with your credentials and then click on “Read the tutorial”. An overview of all devices that can be updated appears.
The procedure is exactly the same for the ICON and the ICON X.
Hold the power button until the display becomes active.
Press the options cog on the right-hand side three times. You will land on the update icon.
Now hold the button for 4 seconds . “UP” appears on the display – the device is in update mode.
Display shows: UPTake the USB-C data lead from the 3-way charging cable. On the remote, hold the lock button and release the waterproof cap – the USB-C port is underneath.
Plug the USB-C connector firmly into the remote and the USB end into a data-capable port on the computer.
A small window appears with the entry “XP Deus 2”. Select it and click on “Connect”. (The entry has this name for technical reasons – this is normal with the ICON.)
The page now shows the detected device, the firmware currently installed and the target version. The latest version is always at the top of the list.
Start the update and leave the device alone. Do not touch the cable or the remote during the transfer.
Do not disconnect! As soon as “Success” appears and the display shows “OK”, you can unplug the cable, close the waterproof cap again and switch off the remote.
Display shows: OKOnly necessary if your set includes the WSA ST wireless headphones.
Hold a button combination for 12 seconds . Our tip: press the minus button one second before the plus button, then hold both. Hold the headphones to your ear while doing so – an audible signal confirms update mode.
The LED on top of the headphones now flashes once per second – this also indicates that the headphones are ready.
LED flashes 1×/sec.Remove the protective cap underneath and plug the USB-C data lead in firmly.
Select the same firmware version as for the remote and click on “Update”. Once successful, unplug the cable and put the protective cap back on.
Same version for everything: Remote and headphones must run on the same firmware version. Otherwise the devices will not work together reliably. So always update both to the same version.
At a glance
| Device | Update mode | Display |
|---|---|---|
| ICON / ICON X remote | Press the options cog 3×, then hold for 4 sec. | Display “UP” → after update “OK” |
| WSA ST headphones | Hold minus + plus for 12 sec. (minus first) | Tone signal + LED flashes 1×/sec. |
These three points solve most problems.
Computer does not recognise the device
Check in this order: is the device really in update mode? Are you using the correct supplied cable? And is the USB port on the computer data-capable (some ports only charge)? If in doubt, try a different port.
Browser playing up
Not every browser is compatible with the XP Updater page. We recommend Google Chrome (alternatively Edge or Firefox). Internet Explorer does not work.
Device stuck in update mode
In rare cases, the data transfer can stall. If so, unplug the USB-C connector, log out in the browser and close it completely. After a short pause, open the browser again, log back in and return to the device. As it is still in update mode, it is enough to plug the USB-C connector back in – the updater will then recognise the device again.
No. The firmware update can only be carried out via a computer (PC, Mac or laptop) using the XP Updater website. The XP GO Terrain app on your smartphone is for recording finds and routes, not for updating.
Yes. XP provides the updates for its detectors free of charge. All you need is a free XP Updater account.
Yes, the update procedure is identical for the ICON remote and the ICON X remote – from activating update mode to completion.
If your set includes the WSA ST headphones: yes. Remote and headphones must run on the same firmware version, otherwise they will not work together reliably.
We recommend Google Chrome. Microsoft Edge and Firefox also work. Internet Explorer is not supported.
Done. Your XP ICON or ICON X and WSA ST headphones are now running on the latest firmware. As active detectorists ourselves, we are happy to help with any questions about your detector – by detectorists for detectorists.
