This volume deals with knives and harvesting tools in Central Europe from their first appearance to the 1st millennium AD. Knives have accompanied mankind since the Palaeolithic Age and have been useful tools, weapons and status symbols over the millennia. This is the first time that a comprehensive overview of all common types has been given. Harvesting tools emerged with the new farming methods of the Neolithic - first made of flint, then bronze, and finally sickles and scythes made of iron. Cutting implements also include scissors, an innovative type of tool that revolutionized the textile trade. After an introduction to the chronology, function and production method, each type is described in detail, supplemented by dating and distribution information as well as further reading.
