Owatrol oil is a versatile rust inhibitor that is particularly suitable for the preservation of floor finds as it stops rust, seals and preserves the natural patina of metal objects. Here are the most important points for use on floor finds:
Properties of Owatrol oil- Rust protection and preservation: Penetrates deep into rust layers, displaces moisture and air and thus stops the corrosion process. It forms an elastic, transparent protective film that preserves the patina.
- High creeping ability: Reaches even hard-to-reach areas such as seams or pores, which is ideal for often uneven floors.
- Versatility: Can be used on ferrous and non-ferrous metals, as well as wood, plastic and glass.
- Paint additive: Improves the adhesion and processing of 1K paints (no 2K paints or water-based paints).
Application for floor finishes1. preparation:- Remove loose rust, rust flakes and dirt (e.g. with a wire brush). Solid rust can remain as Owatrol oil binds it.
- The surface must be clean and free of oil, grease or silicone, but does not have to be dry.
- In the case of chemically contaminated finds (acids, salts), clean with water or steam.
2nd application:- Apply 1-3 coats of Owatrol oil "wet on wet" with a brush, roller or as a spray (10 minutes between coats).
- The spray can (300 ml) is particularly practical for hard-to-reach areas.
- Once dry, the surface should have an even silky gloss finish.
3. drying:- Surface dry after approx. 12 hours (at 23 °C, 50 % humidity); can be recoated after 1-2 days.
- Low temperatures extend the drying time.
4. further processing:- Owatrol oil alone is sufficient for permanent preservation without color change. It preserves the natural rust look, ideal for archaeological finds or decorative objects.
- For additional protection, it can be painted over with 1K paints (e.g. alkyd resin paints). A release primer (e.g. Brantho Korrux Nitrofest) is required for 2-component paints.
- As an additive: Mix 5-10 % Owatrol oil into solvent-based paints to improve spreadability and adhesion.
Special instructions for floor finds- Patina preservation: Owatrol oil is ideal for preserving the "noble rust look" of floor finds without removing the rust. It seals the actual condition so that the rusting process is stopped without changing the appearance.
- Coverage: Approx. 18 m² per liter, depending on the absorbency of the substrate.
- Environmental friendliness: Based on natural oils, without harmful solvents, but still handle with care (do not inhale, avoid skin contact).
- Restrictions: Do not combine directly with 2K acrylic paints or water-based paints. For bare metal it is better to use Owatrol C.I.P. or Ovagrundol.
ConclusionOwatrol oil is an excellent means of preserving metal floor finds, as it stops rust, preserves the patina and is easy to apply. It is particularly suitable for archaeological objects or decorative elements that need to retain their rustic character. For optimum results, follow the application instructions carefully and combine with suitable paints if necessary.
