Deep all-metal searching for highly mineralised ground and the tiniest gold – extensively revised since firmware 3.1, even more sensitive to low-conductivity targets with V4.0 and extended with new audio types in V4.1 (May 2026).
The GOLDFIELD program (factory program 8) is the most specialised of the XP DEUS II factory programs. XP developed it for a very specific challenge: highly mineralised ground in which small, low-conductivity targets such as gold nuggets or fine gold jewellery are normally swallowed up by ground noise or iron values.
Unlike conventional discrimination programs, Goldfield uses a true all-metal mode: the detector does not reject all ground values below a threshold across the board, but only exactly the ground value currently present. This is exactly why a precise ground balance using the GRAB method is so essential – and exactly this was improved again with firmware 3.1.
In short: Goldfield is not an all-round program. It is a specialist tool – used correctly, it finds things that no other program on the DEUS II hears. Used incorrectly, it delivers ground noise.
FMF multi-frequency with frequency addition. Maximum frequency depending on the program up to 40 kHz (standard coil) or 89 kHz (HF2 coil).
Fixed to PITCH audio. Since V3.1 also PITCH 2, and V4.1 adds LOW SQUARE as a refined square tone with a deeper tone profile.
Instead of a classic disc threshold, the program works with IAR (Iron Amplitude Rejection), which only acts on strong iron signals near the surface.
Absolutely essential, mainly via GRAB (pump the coil vertically towards the ground several times). Tracking is possible, as are manual values.
Low to medium (1–3). On very mineralised ground, XP recommends an increase – otherwise work lower for maximum depth.
Since firmware 3.1, the program responds to pieces of gold from approx. 0.01 g – a range that was previously out of reach.
The Goldfield program has changed noticeably with every major firmware update. Anyone using an older version is effectively working with a different program from someone on the current V4.1. Here is an overview of how it has developed over time:
The big overhaul
Stereo audio and Goldfield fine-tuning
Full ecosystem, new audio types, more control
Important about the V4.1 update: The remote control and headphones must run on the same firmware version. If the components are updated unevenly, they will not work together. Before searching, please check that the WS6/WSA and remote control are both on V4.1.
If you want the old V2.0 behaviour back: XP recommends switching to PITCH (instead of PITCH 2), lowering AUDIO RESPONSE to 3 and deactivating the AUDIO FILTER. Goldfield then feels like it did under V2.0 again – this still applies under V4.1.
The following table summarises the official XP recommendations and values proven in practice. They apply to firmware V3.1 and can be used unchanged under V4.0 / V4.1.
| Parameter | Clean ground | Heavily mineralised |
|---|---|---|
| Sensitivity | 90–95 | just below the instability threshold |
| Reactivity | 1 – 1.5 | 2 – 3 XP V3.1 |
| Ground balance | one clean GRAB | readjust GRAB regularly |
| Audio tone | PITCH 2 or LOW SQUARE V4.1 | PITCH (classic) |
| Audio Response | 5 – 7 | 3 – 5 |
| IAR (iron rejection) | 0 – 1 | 2 – 3 |
| Max. frequency | 40 kHz / 89 kHz HF2 | 40 kHz / 89 kHz HF2 |
Important: Always adopt settings from forums or videos together with the firmware version. Values developed for V2.0 behave noticeably differently in V3.1 – especially in Goldfield.
Even if the name makes you think of Australia or California, Goldfield definitely has its place in Germany. But not everywhere. Here is an honest assessment.
Practical tip: Anyone in Germany who mainly searches fields and meadows is much better off with program 1 (General), 2 (Sensitive) or 5 (Park). Use Goldfield specifically where the mineralisation bar is consistently high.
Many statements about the Goldfield program circulate online – some date back to DEUS I days. Here is an objective assessment:
Not necessarily. Goldfield also works very well with the original 9" or 11" coil. However, the HF2 coil extends the frequency range considerably upwards (up to 89 kHz FMF or 120 kHz mono) and therefore brings noticeable advantages especially for the tiniest targets below 0.5 g.
On consistently mineralised ground yes; in changing conditions, tracking can also balance out good targets and so "learn them away". For Goldfield, XP recommends mainly manual GRAB balancing and regular readjustment using the pump method.
That is intentional. XP fundamentally revised the audio behaviour with V3.1, V4.0 refined the sensitivity further and V4.1 adds an extra audio type with LOW SQUARE. If you want the old sound back, switch to PITCH (instead of PITCH 2 or LOW SQUARE), reduce AUDIO RESPONSE to 3 and deactivate the AUDIO FILTER.
Indirectly, yes. V4.1 itself has no new Goldfield-specific algorithms, but it does have the new LOW SQUARE audio type (a refined square tone with a deeper profile) and an improved static mode for maximum depth. Combined with the Goldfield improvements from V3.1 and V4.0, this gives the best configuration so far for tiny gold and deep low-conductivity targets.
Goldfield is not the right tool for wet, salty sand. There, programs 10 (Diving), 11 (Beach) and 12 (Beach Sens) are clearly superior. On dry sand without a high salt content, Goldfield can be used, but it is not the obvious choice.
Yes. Your personal adjustments can be saved to one of the free program slots. This leaves factory program 8 unchanged, and your individual Goldfield configuration can be called up at any time.
Yes. XP has provided all firmware updates free of charge via the XP Update Tool since launch – this applies equally to V3.1, V4.0 and V4.1. The update covers the remote control, the headphones (WS6, WSA II, WSA II XL, WS6 ST, WSA ST, WSA XL ST) and the search coils. Important: the remote control and headphones must run on the same firmware version, otherwise they will not work together.
