Archaeological finds from Germany in a historical illustrated book
The Roman-Germanic Central Museum in pictorial representations from its collections
With almost 1,200 objects, "The Romano-Germanic Central Museum in pictorial representations from its collections" provides a comprehensive overview of antiquities from all regions of Germany.
The presentation begins in the first chapter with the antiquities of the Merovingian period with 365 excavated artefacts. Chapter 2 shows the remains from the period of Roman rule on the Rhine and the Danube with 330 artefacts, including Celtic antiquities. In the last chapter, the burial finds from the prehistoric period are presented in 502 pictures in their numerous gradations up to the exclusive use of stone tools.
This work is able to show the progression of technical skills, the change of tastes and the most reliable illustration of the cultural history of past millennia. This illustrated work provides a glimpse of the rich material in this collection. Of all the implements, jewellery and weapons, only the most significant types have been included in this book.
Each chapter is preceded by a short introductory discussion. The text accompanying the artefacts gives precise notes on the material of which each object is made, the place where it was found and where it was kept. The work may therefore serve both as a guide to the collections and as a reference book for specialised scholars and collectors.
