Belts. Recognise. Identify. Describe.
Published by the State Office for the Non-State Museums in Bavaria, the Archaeological State Museum of Baden-Württemberg, the State Office for Archaeology of Saxony, the Archaeological Museum of Hamburg and the Lower Saxony State Museum in Hanover
The archaeological identification book "Belts" deals with an unusual group of archaeological finds characterised by particularly varied and richly decorated pieces. Belts play a special role in the equipment of Roman soldiers, as a sign of honour for Frankish warriors or in women's costumes. In addition to the composition of complete belt sets and belt chains, the focus is on the individual parts such as buckles, belt hooks and strap tongues. Each type is characterised by a precise description of its form and variants, by information on age and distribution and by references to the use of the fittings.
The "Bestimmungsbuch Archäologie" series presents archaeological artefacts from the German-speaking world, spanning the period from the beginnings to the High Middle Ages. Each volume is systematically structured and has been specially designed for the identification of archaeological collections. It is scientifically sound, comprehensively illustrated and is suitable for the specialist as well as for students or local historians.
