Multi-Au™ hybrid SMF/PI technology, Echo Wave™ audio, real-time gold probability display & 3 search modes for demanding goldfields
The Minelab Gold Monster 2000™ is the successor to the proven Gold Monster 1000 and represents a significant technological step in the development of specialist gold detectors. As the world's first simultaneous multi-frequency detector (SMF) designed explicitly for gold nugget hunting, it combines the fine sensitivity of VLF detectors with the ground-handling ability of a pulse induction detector – Minelab calls this combination Multi-Au™ technology. The frequency range of 12 to 76 kHz, the Echo Wave™ audio system for distinguishing gold, iron and hot rocks, and the real-time gold probability indicator make the Gold Monster 2000 a highly specialised tool for gold prospectors. Weighing 1.25 kg, with a carbon fibre telescopic shaft and two supplied interchangeable batteries, the detector is consistently designed for mobile field use. The price of €2,199 clearly reflects this positioning as a professional detector for gold hunting.
Minelab Electronics is an Australian manufacturer headquartered in Mawson Lakes near Adelaide, which has been one of the technological pioneers in metal detecting for decades. With the Equinox, the company made simultaneous multi-frequency technology accessible to a wide audience, and with the GPX and GPZ series it brought the world's leading pulse induction gold detectors onto the market. The Gold Monster 2000 now opens up a new category: it is the first simultaneous multi-frequency detector developed specifically for gold nugget hunting – and so it combines two worlds that were previously thought of separately.
Its predecessor, the Gold Monster 1000, worked with a fixed single frequency of approx. 45 kHz and was known for its outstanding sensitivity to small gold particles. The Gold Monster 2000 goes further: it transmits simultaneously across a wide frequency range of 12 to 76 kHz and also uses time-domain techniques from the PI world to stabilise ground balance in mineralised ground. For detectorists who search specifically in goldfields, along stream beds, in mineralised mining landscapes or in historical gold rush areas, the Gold Monster 2000 is the most up-to-date instrument Minelab offers in this segment.

The heart of the Gold Monster 2000 is Multi-Au™ technology. Contrary to occasional misconceptions, it is not a classic pulse induction detector. Rather, the device works as a simultaneous multi-frequency detector transmitting in the frequency range of 12 to 76 kHz. The PI element is limited to ground processing: time-domain techniques from the PI world are used to make ground balance more stable – especially in heavily mineralised, so-called hot ground.
Classic VLF-based gold detectors work with a fixed frequency – typically between 18 and 70 kHz. A high frequency is sensitive to small, poorly conducting objects such as tiny gold nuggets, but also reacts more strongly to ground mineralisation. A lower frequency is more stable in mineralised ground, but loses sensitivity to fine gold particles. A simultaneous multi-frequency detector transmits both ranges at the same time and processes the signals together – so it does not have to make this compromise. This is the core advance of the Gold Monster 2000 over its predecessor.
The additional integration of PI techniques into the ground processing logic ensures that the Gold Monster 2000 runs much more quietly than a pure VLF device in heavily mineralised red soils, black-sand river sediments or iron-oxide-rich ground. The result: fewer false signals, a more stable threshold and more reliable target signals – exactly where gold is most commonly found.
The Gold Monster 2000 is not a pure PI device and does not claim to be one. PI technology is used exclusively for ground processing. Anyone who needs a fully-fledged PI detector for extreme depth in highly mineralised Australian goldfields is better served by the Minelab GPX 6000 or GPZ 7000. The Gold Monster 2000 is positioned as a light, mobile device for wide-ranging use – also accessible to beginners.
The audio system of the Gold Monster 2000 is based on Minelab's own Echo Wave™ system. It layers sensitive detection tones with discrimination tones: high tones indicate conductive targets such as gold, copper or silver; low tones signal ferromagnetic objects (iron, magnetite) or hot rocks. This structure preserves sensitivity to small gold nuggets without faint gold signals getting lost in the background noise of ground mineralisation.
Ground balance runs in two modes: Easy-Trak™ works fully automatically and continuously adapts ground compensation to changing conditions without the user having to intervene. Quick-Trak™ allows a fast manual rebalance at the push of a button – useful when you suddenly come across hot rocks and an immediate response is needed. Both systems are tuned to the Multi-Au™ engine.
When switched on, the Gold Monster 2000 actively scans for sources of electromagnetic interference in the surroundings – such as power lines or other devices – and automatically selects the least affected operating frequencies. This ensures a quieter signal picture from the very first second, which makes a noticeable difference especially near devices, vehicles or infrastructure.
In the international detecting community, the Echo Wave™ system is regarded as one of the most practically effective innovations of the Gold Monster 2000. The tone structure allows a quick assessment without constantly having to look at the display. For experienced prospectors who interpret signals primarily by ear, this is a clear advantage in the field – especially when moving quickly across large areas.
The Gold Chance Indicator is one of the most striking innovations compared with the previous model. While the Gold Monster 1000 only distinguished between gold and iron, the 2000 shows a dynamic scale that changes in real time while the detector analyses a target. The display shifts towards gold, hot rocks or iron – depending on how the device assesses the signal.
In addition, the Gold Monster 2000 has a numerical target ID from 0 to 99 for the first time. High values indicate highly conductive materials (silver, copper, large pieces of gold), low values less conductive or smaller objects. This is a considerable advance on its predecessor and allows a much more differentiated assessment before digging.
The Gold Monster 2000 does not offer full metal discrimination in the classic sense – targets cannot be muted by rejecting IDs as on an all-round detector. The Gold Chance Indicator and the target ID are decision aids, not a guarantee. The find can only be finally identified once it has been dug up. This behaviour is typical of a gold detector and deliberately designed so as not to suppress any gold signals.
The Gold Monster 2000 offers three factory-configured search modes tailored to different conditions of use. The two-level concept of beginner-friendliness and professional control runs through all three modes.
The standard mode for most applications. A well-balanced compromise between sensitivity and stability. Suitable for moderately mineralised ground, stream beds and typical goldfields with low to medium ground response.
For heavily mineralised, so-called hot ground with intense ground response. Maximises ground suppression at the cost of slightly reduced sensitivity. The right mode for red soils, magnetite ground and problematic goldfields.
Fully automatic operation without manual settings. Sensitivity and ground balance are controlled by the device itself. Ideal for beginners or for situations where quick, uncomplicated searching is required.
The factory settings of the Gold Monster 2000 are tuned so that the device is ready for use immediately, even without in-depth familiarisation. Experienced prospectors can go deeper into the parameters via the 10-level manual sensitivity control and Quick-Trak™. Anyone with no experience of gold detectors is best off starting in Beginner mode and switching to Normal mode after a few outings.
The Gold Monster 2000 comes with the GM2000-05 Double-D search coil (5″ / 12.7 cm, round). It is waterproof to 1 m and is regarded as a highly sensitive precision coil for tight conditions – between rocks, in scree or on stream banks, where larger coils cannot be manoeuvred.
Compact Double-D coil with very high sensitivity to small gold nuggets. Ideal for tight terrain, rocky ground and use in stream beds up to 1 m water depth. The right choice for hunting gold flakes and micro-nuggets.
Larger search coil for more area coverage on open ground. Gains depth on medium to larger pieces of gold and is recommended for systematically searching larger areas in Australian or American goldfields.
The coil ecosystem of the Gold Monster 2000 is currently smaller than that of all-round multi-frequency detectors. Gold Monster 1000 coils are not compatible. For most situations, the supplied 5″ coil is the right starting point – the optional 6×10″ coil is a sensible addition to the system for searching large areas.
With a total weight of 1.25 kg, the Gold Monster 2000 is one of the lightest detectors in its performance class. The carbon fibre and fibreglass telescopic shaft is compact (65 cm collapsed, 138.2 cm extended), well balanced and designed for rough terrain. The armrest is height-adjustable; the detector is comfortable to hold even on searches lasting several hours.
The detector control electronics are IP55 certified – meaning protection against water jets from all directions and against dust ingress. This is sufficient for use in rain and damp terrain. The search coil itself is waterproof to a depth of 1 m, which allows use in shallow water, along stream beds or on wet ground without any problems. The device is not designed for full submersion of the electronics – for example when searching river beds in deeper water.
According to the manufacturer, the high-contrast LCD display is easy to read both in daylight and in poor light. The controls are limited to the essentials, which noticeably reduces the learning time. Two interchangeable batteries and a car charging cable in the box are a well-thought-out detail for use in remote areas far from the nearest power socket.
At €2,199, the Minelab Gold Monster 2000 is clearly positioned in the professional gold hunting segment. Its direct predecessor, the Gold Monster 1000, worked with a single frequency of approx. 45 kHz and is considerably cheaper. The difference is real: the Gold Monster 2000 offers better ground stability in mineralised ground, a more differentiated target display and a wider frequency range – which justifies the extra cost for users who regularly work in demanding terrain.
Within the Minelab range, the Gold Monster 2000 sits between the Gold Monster 1000 and the fully-fledged PI detectors such as the GPX 6000. Anyone who needs maximum depth in extreme Australian red soils and is prepared to invest considerably more will choose the GPX 6000. Anyone looking for a light, mobile and at the same time technologically modern device for wide international use – including in less extremely mineralised areas such as Europe or North America – is very well served by the Gold Monster 2000.
Compared with all-round multi-frequency detectors such as the Minelab Equinox 900 or the XP Deus II , the Gold Monster 2000 is clearly more specialised. Anyone who searches for a variety of things – coins, relics, jewellery and occasionally gold – is often more flexible with an all-round detector. If, on the other hand, you mainly hunt for gold nuggets and want the technology optimised for that, the Gold Monster 2000 gives you a device that is technologically up to date and is not a compromise for this purpose.

The Minelab Gold Monster 2000™ is a significant device from a technological point of view: as the world's first simultaneous multi-frequency detector designed specifically for gold nugget hunting, it fills a gap in the Minelab range. The combination of SMF sensitivity in the 12 to 76 kHz range and PI-assisted ground processing makes the device more stable in heavily mineralised ground than all previous single-frequency gold detectors in the same price bracket.
The overall package is convincing: low weight, robust build, a well-thought-out charging concept with two interchangeable batteries and a car charger, the practical Echo Wave™ audio feedback and easy operation all speak for the device. The Gold Chance Indicator with numerical target ID is a useful addition which, while not replacing full discrimination, considerably improves the basis for deciding before digging.
The price of €2,199 is a real investment. Anyone who searches for gold specifically and regularly, whose main area of use is demanding mineralised ground and who values a light, mobile professional device gets the most technologically up-to-date device Minelab offers for this purpose with the Gold Monster 2000. Anyone looking for an all-rounder for coins, relics and occasional gold hunting, on the other hand, is usually more flexible and cheaper off with the Minelab Equinox 900 or the XP Deus II.
